A mineral that many are deficient in is magnesium! Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 metabolic/enzymatic reactions in the body. Magnesium is required for healthy bones, immune function, production of cellular energy, transmission of nerve impulses, normal blood pressure, and healthy heart rhythm. Half of our supply of magnesium exists in the skeletal system. Other supplies are found in muscle, soft tissue, and bodily fluids. Blood tests are a very inaccurate way of testing magnesium levels, as less than 3% is seen circulating the blood. Unfortunately, the diets of Canadians are providing less magnesium than they used to, as the quality of our soil and foods has changed drastically. Pesticides, chemical fertilizers, monoculture, soil compaction, and surface irrigation have all reduced the supply of magnesium in our crops.

Many of the foods and pharmaceuticals in our world seem to deplete magnesium. Excess intake of phosphoric acid (sodas), phytic acids (soybeans), and oxalic acid (raw greens) can be quite detrimental for our health, it’s super important to be mindful and ensure moderation with our eating/drinking habits. Some common drugs that affect magnesium levels are antacids, acid blockers, antibiotics, anti-hypertensives, cardiac glycosides, and oral contraceptives. Rises in poorer digestion and gastrointestinal issue are another major problem, as this results in the inability to absorb magnesium. Heavy metal toxicity, parasitic infections, and glyphosate are also major contenders for the lack of minerals in people.
